Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has officially taken over the Electoral Commission’s former headquarters located on Plot 55, Jinja Road, Kampala. The land measures 1.093 hectares.
According to Justice Simon Byabakama Simon Mugenyi, the Chairperson Electoral Commission says their former headquarters was handed over to UNRA on Tuesday, March 14th, including the file containing particulars of the land, and was received by Egineer Lawrence Pario, the contract manager for the Kampala Flyover and Head of Structures and Bridges at UNRA.
During the handover, Byabakama revealed that the plot was formerly the main office of the Government Central Purchasing Corporation (GCPC) until 1996, when it became the home of the then Interim Electoral Commission (IEC).
Eng. Pario said UNRA is set to demolish the facilities at plot 55 Jinja Road, Kampala, to pave way for the ongoing development of the Kampala Flyover Construction and Road Upgrading Project (KFCRUP).
On December 16, 2022, the Commission embarked on the process of relocating its offices, personnel, and equipment from this location to the new temporary office premises on plot 1-3/5, Seventh Street, Industrial Area, formerly the headquarters of the National Housing and Construction Company (NHCC).
