The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has marked the world day for child sexual exploitation, abuse and violence globally with the aim to raise awareness, promote effective prevention strategies, and advocate for comprehensive support systems for survivors.

In a statement released by the United Nations today Monday November 18 2024 marks the World Day for Prevention of and Healing from child sexual exploitation with a call to action, under the theme ”Emerging technologies, threats and opportunities for protection of children from sexual exploitation and sexual abuse,”

‘This significant day serves as a crucial reminder of the pressing need to safeguard children worldwide from the devastating impacts of exploitation and abuse,” the statement read in part.

UNICEF in the statement noted that child sexual exploitation and abuse continue to be alarming issues that affect millions of children across the globe, cutting across borders, cultures, and socio-economic backgrounds.

“Globally, countless children, especially girls, are victims of sexual misconduct and exploitation a gross violation of their rights,” the statement further read.

Therefore the observance of this day is a call to action through prevention and healing with Key Objectives of the Day.

According to the statement, the day emphasizes the importance of increasing public awareness about the signs of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Communities are encouraged to empower themselves to recognize and report suspicious activities.

UNICEF on this day has also called upon the communities especially stakeholders, including governments, organizations, and individuals, to implement effective prevention measures.

“This includes establishing education programs and creating safe environments for children, and that the day should be used for healing and recovery for survivors and   a call to improved access to mental health services, legal support and community resources.

The statement further encourages global collaboration and partnerships between governments, NGOs, and civil society to forge a united front against child exploitation and abuse.

In light of these objectives, a call to action has been issued to individuals, communities, and institutions alike.

“Whether through advocacy, volunteering, or simply educating oneself and others, every effort is vital in the fight against child sexual exploitation and abuse. Together, we can create a safer world for our children, ensuring that they grow up free from violence and exploitation,” UNICE noted.

As the day is being observed UNICEF has advised that let everyone commit to protecting the most vulnerable in society while ensuring a brighter, safer future for all children.

The United Nations officially recognized this day in 2022 after decades of hard work by survivors, advocates, and allies to increase global awareness of the prevalence of sexual violence against children and mobilize action to prevent and support healing and justice for survivors.
