The Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) has confirmed that a total of 379,748 candidates are sitting the 2024 Senior Four examinations across the country.
Jennifer Kalule Nsamba, the UNEB spokesperson, said UNEB hasn’t recorded serious irregularities during the day of this year’s examination that started on Monday, October 14th, 2024.
Kalule noted that a total of 369,601 are pioneers of the new curriculum while 10,147 candidates are sitting for the transitional examination based on the old curriculum at 4,168 centers.
“This will be the first time candidates are examined under the new lower secondary curriculum, but also students under the old curriculum are sitting, Kalule said.
Kalule said that, for the new curriculum, they do have about 50.8% female candidates who are sitting for their final examination in comparison to their male counterparts, who stand at 49%.
Additionally, she said that 138,502 candidates (36.4%) are funded by the government under the Universal Secondary Education (USE) Programme, an increase from last year’s 114,200 government-sponsored candidates.
Kalule said that the examination materials were delivered on time, and scouts and invigilators were in place earlier to make the examination successful.
She cautioned the candidates against coming late, as it can lead them to be disqualified.
UNEB also warned school heads not to dismiss candidates with school fee challenges but to talk with the parents to solve the math.
The curriculum, introduced in 2020, faced disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, extending the typical duration for students to complete the Uganda Certificate of Education from four to five years.
