The Permanent Secretary in Uganda’s Ministry of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and National Guidance, Aminah Zawedde has encouraged Ugandans, especially the youth, to consider joining the IT sector due to the country’s ICT industry’s substantial potential for creating millions of job opportunities.
Zawedde made these remarks during the opening of the Inaugural Uganda Developers Summit on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at the National Innovation Hub Nakawa, organized under the theme “Positioning Uganda’s Tech Talent for Digital Economy Growth.”
The PS encouraged the young innovators by stating that anyone can innovate. she mentioned that many young Ugandans without jobs or degrees could join the industry, find employment for themselves, and create job opportunities for others.
“These people are all looking for employment, but there are opportunities in the IT space and opportunities in terms of jobs that people can do online from Uganda for countries outside of Uganda for even companies within Uganda, but you don’t have to go to the office to do the work,” Zawedde said.
She further emphasized that the 46 million population of the country is not the only one to absorb the digital innovation industry; it can also be consumed across borders.
Zawedde pointed out the importance of the summit, saying that it is helping Uganda develop talent that can be employed to work online to develop systems in this technological era where people want to take as many services online as possible.
The PS’s assertions align with Uganda’s broader digital transformation initiatives aimed at enhancing the ICT sector as a key driver for economic growth and employment. The National ICT Innovation Hub, for instance, is designed to stimulate homegrown digital solutions and catalyze digital employment across the country.
