The value of coffee exports from Uganda has tremendously been increasing, and this can be attributed to the different efforts put in place by the government through the Ministry of Agriculture and other stakeholders.
In the Financial Year 2023/24, Uganda’s coffee sector achieved a record-breaking achievement through coffee exports, which earned Uganda USD 1.14 billion, making a 6.33% increase in value compared to the previous financial years, the highest revenue in 30 years.
This success is attributed to the resilience and dedication of the government’s effective funding and empowerment of coffee farmers, including initiatives such as Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) and ‘‘Omwanyi Telemba campaigns’’ in the Buganda subregion, which resulted in the supply of over 107 million coffee seedlings to various farmers.
As a result, Uganda exported 6.13 million bags of coffee, an impressive rise from the 5.8 million bags in FY 2022/23, which earned Uganda USD 846 million.
In June 2024 alone, Uganda exported 667,037 kg of coffee valued at US$ 162.36 million, significantly contributing to the annual total and proving to the world that its dream of hitting US$ 1.5 billion by 2030 is achievable.
Additionally, government efforts spearheaded by President Yoweri Museveni to rationalize the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) to the Ministry of Agriculture are geared at boosting Uganda’s coffee production and increasing the coffee value chain in the international market.
