Uganda Partners with China’s Chery Automobile to Boost Electric Vehicle Manufacturing

Chinese automaker Chery Automobile Company has proposed to open an industrial plant that will be assembling electric cars, buses, cable railways, car chargers, and solar panels, contributing to U ganda’s growing Electronic Vehicles (EV) sector.

The announcement was made during a high-level meeting on April 17, 2025, between Zhang Guozhong, Vice Chairman and Board Secretary of Chery Automobile, and Uganda’s Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja in Kampala.

Zhang highlighted Chery’s global success and growing ambition to expand into emerging markets:

“Chery automobile company is currently valued at $70 billion, is one of China’s most prominent automakers. In 2024 alone, the company sold over 2.6 million vehicles globally, ranking as the fourth-largest automobile manufacturer in China.’’

Prime Minister Nabbanja noted that Chery automobile’s expansion into Uganda marks a significant step in Chery’s global strategy to tap into emerging markets and support sustainable development through green technology.

Prime Minister Nabbanja welcomed Chery’s expansion into Uganda as a strategic milestone, emphasizing its alignment with Uganda’s commitment to sustainable development and clean energy solutions:

“In a bid to reduce bad emissions Uganda is committed in developing electric vehicle infrastructure and in March this year we launched our first public EV charging station and in the near future we are to have over 10 EV charging stations within the Kampala metropolitan areas.’’

Nabbanja also highlighted that Uganda has positioned itself as a gateway to the East African Market and assured the Chery Automobiles Company of a conducive environment that will enable them to do business in Uganda .

The initiative is expected to create local employment opportunities, boost technology transfer, and align with Uganda’s national agenda to reduce carbon emissions and embrace environmentally friendly transportation alternatives.
