Uganda Museum Embraces Digital Era in Bold Modernization Drive

The Uganda Museum is currently undergoing an exciting makeover, combining cutting edge technology to revolutionize the visitors’ experience and involve the next generation of visitors to the museum, paving the way for a new era of modernity for Uganda’s museums.

The ongoing renovations at the Uganda Museum fall under the umbrella of a broader scheme to introduce modern technology into the cultural tourism sector that will change the way Ugandans and international visitors experience Uganda’s rich cultural heritage.

Senior government officials, including the Minister of Tourism, Tom Butime, and Permanent Secretary Grace Akello, held a brainstorming session recently led by Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities Bahinduka Mugarra Martin at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala about the future of the Museum, where they prioritized the inclusion of digital technology to make the Museum more interactive and globally competitive.

“By embracing digital technology, we are making the Museum more interactive and inclusive, especially for younger generations who are increasingly connected to the digital world,”  Butime said.

The new digital exhibitions will offer visitors a more interactive experience, allowing them to connect with artifacts and historical exhibits in ways not available with conventional static exhibitions.

Visitors will be able to view through key historical events and cultural practices in 3D environments.

Dr. Peter Okello, the Director of the Uganda Museum, also spoke about the Museum’s commitment to expanding its facilities to accommodate a growing number of historical artifacts.

“The Museum plans to modernize with digital exhibitions, preserving Uganda’s cultural heritage while enhancing global engagement, ensuring relevance in the digital era ,” Dr. Okello remarked.

Grace Akello also suggested to the potential impact of these upgrades on the tourism sector, noting that the refurbished Museum would be a big attraction for international tourists.

“The Museum is no longer a place for passive observation, it’s now an active space for learning, interaction, and engagement. This will make it a must visit destination for tourists who are seeking education as well as entertainment,” she stated.

Through the introduction of digital and interactive elements, the Museum will be able to attract a new generation of visitors, from tech fans to students, to whom the educational content will be made more engaging and convenient.

As Uganda continues to invest more in its cultural institutions, the technological make over of the Uganda Museum is an indication of Uganda’s investment in safeguarding its heritage and embracing the digital age.
