Uganda Mourns Rtd. Maj. John Kazoora: A Brave Soldier and Honest Politician

Uganda is mourning the death of Rtd. Maj. John Bashaija Kazoora, a former soldier, Member of Parliament, and respected opposition leader.

He passed away on April 20, 2025, after a long illness. His family is expected to share more details and funeral arrangements soon.

Kazoora began his career as a fighter in the National Resistance Army (NRA) during the 1980s, helping to bring President Yoweri Museveni to power.

He served as Member of Parliament for Kashari County from 1996 to 2006 and helped start the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). He was known for standing firmly against corruption and for always speaking the truth, even when it wasn’t popular.

In 2024, Kazoora shocked many by meeting President Museveni again. The President forgave him for past criticism and encouraged him to take care of his health. Despite their differences, this was seen as a rare moment of reconciliation.

Leaders from all sides have paid tribute to Kazoora, including the Speaker of Parliament Hon. Anita Among called him a mentor who served Uganda with honor both as a soldier and as a lawmaker.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa remembered their time together in the early 2000s, calling him a strong and wise leader.

The FDC, which he helped to form, praised his courage and his fight against corruption.

The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), where he was active until his death, called him a tireless fighter for justice and democracy.

As Uganda says goodbye, many agree that Kazoora’s legacy is bigger than politics. Whether on the battlefield, in Parliament, or in opposition, he always stood for truth, fairness, and service to the people.

May his soul rest in peace.
