The Minister of State for Economic Monitoring, Rose Lilly Akello, has confirmed that Uganda is headed toward having its first oil production by 2025.
The Minister made the assurance on October 18, 2024, while on a monitoring mission in the Buliisa and Tilenga oil fields of the Bunyoro sub-region.
The Oil drilling program which was commissioned on January 23, 2023, by H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Uganda acts as a key milestone as the country races to meet its target of first oil output in 2025.
“We realized that many activities so far have already been done and by 2025, I believe at all costs that our first oil will be out as a country. This will enhance the revenue collection for this country and as a result, the socio-economic transformation agenda which is enshrined in the NRM Manifesto,” Akello said.
Akello expressed optimism noting that the government is on the right track to recovering investment resources depending on the quality of work and the expertise exhibited in the different sites.
“Government has put in place security and people who are closely monitoring all the activities like UNOC, Uganda Petroleum Authority, the Ministry of Energy and this is a way how we can protect our interests as a country, “she said.
As a top priority, Uganda plans to produce about 230,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The country’s crude reserves are estimated at 6.5 billion barrels, of which 1.4 billion barrels are recoverable.
Civil works under the Uganda Petroleum Authority at the Tilenga Industrial Area are approaching completion. Steel and framework for the major oil storage tank foundations have been installed in the Tilenga Industrial Area, which will house the Central Processing Facility (CPF), Drilling Support Base, and Construction Camp.
Civil works are 99.8% done, with all sections handed over to the Drilling and Wells Contractors and the EPSCC team. CPF construction is moving swiftly, with pipe racks going up and equipment foundations being built.
