Uganda Cranes Edge Guinea 1-0 in Crucial World Cup Qualifier

Uganda Cranes secured a vital 1-0 victory over Guinea in their FIFA World Cup Qualifiers clash at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. A 35th-minute free kick from Allan Okello sealed all three points for the hosts, keeping their World Cup hopes alive.

The game started cautiously, with both teams struggling to establish control. Uganda created the first real chance in the 15th minute when Travis Mutyaba and Okello combined to set up Rogers Mato, but Guinea’s goalkeeper Soumalia Sylla denied his close-range effort.

Guinea responded in the 18th minute when Seydouba Cissé narrowly missed the target with a powerful strike. Uganda nearly broke the deadlock in the 30th minute, but Elvis Bwomono failed to convert Mato’s teasing cross at the back post.

The breakthrough finally came in the 35th minute after Mady Camara fouled Mutyaba just outside the penalty area. Okello stepped up and delivered a precise free kick, leaving Sylla helpless as the ball sailed into the net, sending the home crowd into celebration.

Uganda was forced into an early change at halftime, with Timothy Awany replacing the injured Bwomono. Another setback followed in the 59th minute when Muhammed Shaban picked up an injury, prompting Calvin Kabuye to come on.

Guinea pushed for an equalizer, but Uganda’s defense held firm. In the 77th minute, Bevis Mugabi made a crucial block to deny Yaldy Diaby, and in the 88th minute, goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi pulled off a key save to stop Yadaly Guirassy’s close-range shot.

The win lifted Uganda to second place in Group G with nine points from six games, strengthening their push for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Minister of Education Janet Museveni congratulated the team, stating: “Congratulations to Uganda Cranes on this well-deserved victory! We praise God for His grace and your unwavering determination. May continued success follow you as you embark on the next challenge to the World Cup.”

FUFA President Moses Magogo also applauded the players and fans: “I want to thank the fans for their incredible support. When the team is down, it needs the fans to lift it up. Winning at home is crucial it builds momentum and belief. The players have given their all from the first minute, and this victory will inspire us as we prepare to host Somalia and Mozambique in the upcoming matches.”

With momentum on their side, Uganda Cranes will now focus on their next home fixtures as they continue their quest for a historic World Cup qualification.
