Uganda Car Thieves Use Fake South Sudan Number Plates – Police

Car thieves are using South Sudanese number plates to steal Ugandan vehicles and smuggle them into Kenya, Police have said.

Regional Police Spokesperson East Kyoga, Michael Odongo says dishonest dealers were using fake South Sudan number plates to conceal stolen Ugandan cars.

“We have decided to start impounding all vehicles bearing South Sudan number plates for verification, because we have realised that most of those vehicles are stolen from Ugandan citizens,” Odongo said.

Odongo said one person was arrested on May 21 on his way to Kenya with a vehicle stolen from Soroti District.

A Flying Squad Officer in East Kyoga who preferred anonymity told Explorer News that a Toyota Premio car was sold for as little as Ug. Shs 1.5M and a Subaru for Ug. Shs 3.8M on the Kenyan black market.
