Local authorities in Rubaga Division are urging big truck drivers to cease overloading their vehicles when traveling along the Nabunya road. This plea comes after a recent accident on May 28, 2024, at approximately 11:00 a.m., in which an overloaded truck overturned, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.

Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing incident, describing how the Fuso truck, coming from Kabaka’s Lake and heading towards Nabunya Road, failed to ascend the slope towards Kabaka Mwenda Mutebi’s palace. The overloaded vehicle ultimately reversed, overturned, and collided with a building housing various shops, tragically causing the demise of one woman.

Local residents immediately pointed out that the truck’s excessive cargo was the likely cause of the incident. They believe that the weight of the load prevented the vehicle from navigating the uphill road successfully, resulting in its overturning and the destruction of both property and lives.

“The Fuso truck overturned, directly landing on the woman, causing fatal injuries. It was a horrific scene to witness,” shared one eyewitness.

Evelyn Nakiryowa, the Local Council I Chairperson of Tomusange Zone, expressed her concern about the recurring accidents on this road. She highlighted that overloaded trucks, coupled with their age and the road’s steep incline, contribute to the high number of mishaps in the area. Nakiryowa also emphasized that the narrow and sloping road leading to St. Lawrence University on Nabunya Road sees frequent overspeeding, resulting in numerous accidents and additional loss of life.

“This is not the first time such accidents have occurred. Not long ago, another overloaded Fuso truck transporting charcoal failed to climb the road and crashed into a residence. Thankfully, no one was injured as the occupants were away at the time,” Nakiryowa narrated.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Fuso truck fled the scene, prompting a police manhunt. Authorities have assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is underway, and a statement will be issued once the inquiries are complete.

In light of these incidents, local authorities in Rubaga Division are calling for stricter adherence to loading regulations and increased awareness among truck drivers regarding the risks associated with overloading. They are also urging drivers to ensure their vehicles are well-maintained and properly equipped to handle the region’s challenging roads.
