The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has issued tickets to 99 road users in just one week for driving beyond the speed limit on the Kampala- Entebbe Express Way, which is 70 km/h.
According to Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for Uganda Traffic Police, drivers were captured on CCTV cameras for exceeding the speed limit and issued penalty tickets of Shs 200,000 each.
“As part of the Fika Salama operation, we have issued tickets to 99 drivers for the offenses of overspeeding on the Kampala-Entebbe Express Way,” Kananura said.
He noted that the Fika Salama Extra awareness team continues to engage communities through media houses, social media platforms, and physical engagements on issues of road safety.
Fika Salama Extra is a campaign designed as an intervention to reduce road crashes in Uganda.
According to the 2018 global status report on road safety, 1.35 million people died and 50 million sustained injuries globally due to road accidents.
On average, Uganda loses 12 people daily due to traffic and road crashes, and Fika Salama Extra is against this background.
