Tensions have escalated within the National Unity Platform (NUP) following the Central Executive Committee’s (CEC) instruction for Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya to withdraw his candidacy for Member of Parliament in Kampala Central and instead contest in Mbarara, his home area.
In a phone interview with our reporter on December 16, 2024, Rubongoya expressed his frustration, asserting his right to contest for the Kampala position.
“I live in Kampala Central, and I have every right to run for this seat, regardless of what some CEC members think,” he stated.
Rubongoya revealed that during a recent meeting at One Love Beach Busabala, he announced his intention to run for MP in Kampala Central. However, he faced pushback from some CEC members who suggested he should leave the seat for a Muganda candidate and instead run in Mbarara.
“This is very absurd,” he said.
Rubongoya accused the CEC members of being tribalistic, arguing that being from western Uganda should not disqualify him from leadership roles in Buganda.
“I was shocked by their reasoning but not entirely surprised. If I want to contest in Buganda, I should be allowed to do so. These tribal sentiments have no place in our politics,” he added, frustrated by the discussions.
On the other hand, some NUP members believe Rubongoya should focus on his home constituency, arguing that his popularity as secretary general would benefit Mbarara.
Betty Namboze Bakireke, MP for Mukono Municipality, stated that having Rubongoya contest in Mbarara could enhance NUP’s presence in western Uganda, where the party currently lacks popularity.
Nakawa Speaker Luyombya Godfrey added that it would be selfish for Rubongoya to pursue a Kampala seat when his home area could gain more from his representation.
As the 2026 elections approach, many party members are declaring their intentions for various political positions. For NUP, earning a candidacy ticket largely hinges on individual relationships with party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, who continues to hold immense influence within the organization.
