More than 500 supporters of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga faction on Monday, October 7, 2024, were left stranded in Kampala after the officials had failed to pay their transport refund.
The supporters were ferried from different parts of the country to witness the launch of a signature collection exercise that will enable the successful registration of the People’s Front for Freedom (PPF), a proposed new party ahead of the 2026 elections.
A source at Katonga offices confirmed that the supporters were left stranded for hours by the officials, who included KCCA Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, MP Ssemujju Iganda, Ingrid Turinawe, and many others after they failed to pay their transport allowances of Shs100,000 that were promised for them.
“We were transported from Iganga after being promised Sh100,000 each for attending today’s signature function, but to our disappointment, we haven’t received our pay as promised by Lukwago, and yet we have signed and submitted our national IDs,” Kasanda Joseph narrated his disappointment.
It should be recalled that the Electoral Commission earlier on had rejected the PFF’s registration, claiming its similarities to the already registered People Power Front (PPF) and concerns over the proposed blue color scheme, which resembles that of FDC Najjanankumbi.
It also clearly depicts how the opposition political parties in Uganda lack dialogue and coexistence skills, which are important in managing political parties; therefore, there’s a likelihood that the newly formed party will face the same challenges.
