The speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has advised Members of Parliament to sensitise their electorates on the ongoing National Housing and Population Census.

According to the Speaker, the exercise will help the government develop national planning and development frameworks for households.

Among made the remarks during the plenary session held on May 16, 2024, at Parliament.

“We have been having the National Housing and Population Census, and so far it has moved on well, apart from some small incidences in some areas. I want to urge members to talk to their electorates and encourage them to be registered because, at the end of the day, it is out of that registration that we shall know the population we have as a country,” Among added.

“I urge all MPs and other leaders to sensitise electorates to participate in the ongoing National Housing and Population Census, because the exercise is critical at providing information on the current number of people living in Uganda and the nature of their households, so as to enable the government plan for us better,” Among said.

However, Among noted that, besides a few isolated disruptions, the exercise has been largely successful.

On May 15, 2024, Navas Vella, a self-proclaimed “Jesus” in Luwero district, was remanded to Buntuntumula prison for refusing to be counted during the ongoing National Population and Housing Census 2024.

The 2024 National Population and Housing Census is currently underway. The census, which began on May 10th, will conclude on May 19th, 2024.
