A team from the Office of the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has today returned 500 iron sheets meant for Karamoja sub-region, following a directive by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The team delivered a consignment of iron sheets to the stores of the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) at Namanve on Thursday, April 13, 2023.
However, officers manning the stores at the Namanve Industrial Area have refused to receive the consignment of iron sheets purchased by the Speaker, saying they are yet to receive instructions from Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja allowing them to enter the store.
The iron sheets were meant to replace 500 pieces that had been handed over to her from what was procured for vulnerable people in the Karamoja sub-region, a matter that has raised a lot of controversy.
Over 12,000 iron sheets were given out to different cabinet ministers and government officials by Karamoja Affairs Minister Mary Goretti Kitutu.
Public pressure has mounted on most of the beneficiaries following President Museveni’s letter to the Prime Minister, directing all those involved in the scandals to return or pay an equivalent amount of the iron sheets meant for the Karamoja sub-region.
In December 2021, Parliament passed a Ugx 39 billion supplementary budget to support livelihood programs in Karamoja.
From the amount, Ugx 22 billion was used to purchase goats, and Ugx 5 billion used to procure 100,000 iron sheets that have been mismanaged.
