The Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC) Summit and President of South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit and Paul Kagame, the President of the Republic of Rwanda, have discussed ways to consolidate peace and security in the EAC block and foster social-economic development.

The duo stressed that peace and security in the East African Community are prerequisites to social and economic development within the community and vital to the achievement of the objectives of the community, calling upon partner states to comply with their obligations as enshrined in the treaty for the establishment of the East African Community.

This was reached after the consultative meeting between the two East African presidents held in Kigali, Rwanda, on February 22, 2024. The meeting included the secretary general of the East African Community, Dr. Peter Mutuku Mathuki.

According to the communiqué of the consultative meeting between the two presidents, the presidents also underscored the need for expeditious complementary implementation of the political track of the EAC-led Nairobi process and the Luanda process to avert the unfolding dire security situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The duo presidents believe that the process of averting the insecurity situation in the DRC risks spillover into neighbouring partner states.

President Salva Kiir commended his host counterpart, President Kagame, for the warm welcome accorded to him and his delegation and for hosting the consultative meeting in an amicable and cordial atmosphere.
