A wedding preparation ceremony in Butawata Township, Mubende district took a devastating turn on Thursday, June 6th, 2024, when six people were electrocuted while installing a tent.
According to Aaron Muzoora, the Kigando Sub County chairperson, the victims accidentally came into contact with the main power lines while setting up the tent near the Butawata market.
These include Godwin Asaba Bidewa, Boaz Byamukama, and Jordan Ayebazibwe of Kigando village, while others were identified as George Walusimbi, Ambrose Kakuru, and Nasasira Kyozzo.
In a heartbreaking attempt to help, two additional individuals who tried to rescue those initially struck are now hospitalized in critical condition.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by Mubende district police. The groom said the wedding will be canceled in respect of the deceased.
“We can’t have celebrations after such a tragedy. Nelson Otamugaya [the groom] said
Muzoora, deeply affected by the tragedy, has called on electricity agencies to increase public awareness campaigns regarding the dangers of handling electricity,”
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of electrical safety and the potential for serious injury or death if proper precautions are not taken.
The bodies were taken to Mubende referral hospital for a postmortem.
