Rukungiri: Suspect Detained in Killing of Retired Police Officer

Police in Rukungiri Today, July 14, 2023, reported the arrest of Laban Nsimenta, a local businessman, in connection with the murder of retired AIP Emmanuel Karekaho.

According to SP Musa Tibakirana, the Rukungiri District Police Commander, Laban was apprehended and taken to Rukungiri Central Police Station while he was trying to sell his Toyota Wish cars, which arouse suspicion.

“The arrest of Nsimenta Laban came about when he started selling his Toyota Wish cars and replacing them, which arouse suspicion amongst the public, and we were contacted immediately,” Tibakirana said.

Karekaho, a 61-year-old police officer, was found dead on July 6th, 2023, in Rwakoma in Kebisoni town council after withdrawing 5.2 million shillings from Centenary Bank in Rukungiri.

Magezi Patrick, an eyewitness, stated that he discovered the body after a Toyota Wish vehicle near the crime scene sped off. Upon finding the body, he immediately notified his employer, who advised him to report the incident to the local police.

“I filed a report on the incident at the Kebisoni Police Station under SD REF 10/06/07/2023, where the Rukungiri District Central Police Station was also promptly informed and responded to the scene,” Magezi said.

According to authorities, the victim was mugged, murdered, and his body was deposited at the spot in Minera by a Toyota Wish automobile believed to belong to the perpetrator.

Nsimenta is currently being held at Rukungiri Central Police station as investigations into the murder continue.
