The President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has appealed to ghetto youth to engage in the four sectors of the economy in order to overcome poverty.

The president made these remarks while interacting with the Kampala ghetto youth groups in Kololo on December 20, 2023 at the launch of the Ghetto Youth Saccos.

According to Museveni, the four sectors that the youth should engage themselves in include commercial agriculture, industry, services, and ICT. He urged the ghetto youth to work together and be accountable for one another if they are to get the best out of these SACCOs.

“Engage in the four sectors of commercial agriculture, industry, services, and ICT to overcome poverty. I am glad that some are already involved in the service sector. We shall support them through the State House skilling initiative,” Museveni said.

President Museveni launched the Presidential Initiative on Skilling the Girl and Boy Child in 2020, set to reduce the unemployment rates of young girls and boys. The skills of baking, tailoring, weaving, shoemaking, and hairdressing, among others, are hoped to help them start up small businesses that can later grow to employ others.

The president thanked Brig. Ddamulira, Maj. Emma Kutesa, and those they work with in the ghetto for bringing light into the ghetto and mobilising them to form SACCOs.

The ghetto youth groups formed 12 SACCOs, which the President promised to support with startup capital of Ugx100 million each.
