President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has extended his heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community, praising Pope Francis for his unwavering efforts in promoting global unity.
In a statement released Tuesday April 22, 2025, the President extended his heartfelt sympathies to Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, and through him to the global Catholic community.
“I have received the news of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis with profound sadness. On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Uganda, and on my own behalf, I extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to you and, through you, to the entire Catholic Church worldwide.” President Museveni stated in the statement.
He also conveyed Uganda’s solidarity with Catholics globally during this time of mourning stating that “We stand in solidarity with Catholics in Uganda and around the globe during this time of mourning.”
According to the president’s statement, Pope Francis will be remembered as an extraordinary spiritual leader and a deeply respected theologian for his voice for peace, social justice, compassion, and humility touched the hearts of millions and inspired hope among the faithful.
He also acknowledged Pope Francis’ efforts to foster unity among different faiths, citing his commitment to interfaith dialogue, his readiness and enthusiasm to deal with other faiths, such as the Muslims, the Orthodox Christians, etc.
The President reflected on Pope Francis’ remarkable legacy as a spiritual leader and theologian, noting his unwavering commitment to the faith and his influential role in revitalizing the Catholic Church’s mission amidst a world that is increasingly secular.
Pope Francis will be laid to rest on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in St. Peter’s Square, following simplified rites approved by him in 2024.
