President Yoweri Museveni has commissioned the Mahathi Infra lakeside logistics facility in Kawuku Bwerenga, a project to transport oil from Kenya’s port of Kisumu to Entebbe using oil tanker ships
During the launch on Thursday 17, July, 2024, President Museveni highlighted Uganda’s current irrational transport system, with high road traffic and the slightly elevated cost of cargo, which is uneconomical in nature.
The $270 million project, is a strategic addition to Uganda’s oil infrastructure expected to halve freight costs and streamline the transportation of fuel between the two countries.
With a capacity to store significant quantities of fuel and deliver 7,000,000 liters of fuel per shipment, the facility targets to stabilize the economy by ensuring ample fuel storage in Uganda and to improve the country’s oil transportation system.
The President expressed confidence in the assurances provided by the proprietors and ministers regarding the safety measures in place to prevent any potential pollution of the freshwater lake.
“I am also glad the proprietors and the ministers have assured the country that there is no chance of pollution from this petroleum in the freshwater lake, which is a significant danger,” the President said.
The Mahathi Infra lakeside logistics facility, founded in May 2015, is a joint venture between Mahathi Infra Services Pvt of India, Nairobi-based Siginon Group, an engineering firm, and a local company, Fortune Energy.
