The Chairperson of the Summit of the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State and President of the Republic of South Sudan, H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, has called on all Africans to embrace the spirit of brotherhood and, where omnipresent conflicts arise, to utilise the regional, continental, and global peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms available.
President Kiir made the remarks on Monday, January 15, 2024, while meeting the EAC Secretary General, Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mutuku Mathuki, at State House, Juba, South Sudan.
In the deliberations that focused on setting targets for deliverables under the leadership of President Salva Kiir and the need to foster a predictable and stable security environment that can catalyse the regional integration agenda, the Chairperson noted with concern the interstate political and security dynamics in the region that require urgent intervention.
It is worth noting that the East African Community is in a volatile situation following tensions between member states, especially Rwanda and Burundi, then Rwanda and the DRC.
In this regard, Kiir has identified a number of interventions that will be activated towards addressing inter-state relations, according to the EAC secretariat. The Secretariat adds that Kiir has committed to assigning special envoys to the various capitals to deliver his message and, where necessary, engaging the leaders to resolve the matters within the framework of the EAC.
President Salva Kiir also reiterated his commitment to strengthen the East African Community during his tenure as chairperson.
