POLICE SPEAKS OUT ON THE MBARARA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ STRIKE

The territorial Police of Mbarara City on Wednesday night 22nd June 2022 at 10:30 pm responded to a call from members of the public over the misconduct of Mbarara high school students that had blocked the Mbarara-Bushenyi road and stealing merchandise from shops after the S.4 candidates developed a fight against the S.6 candidates.

According to the Rwizi Regional Spokesperson ASP Samson Kasasira, the Police anti-riot and the Army responded to the scene immediately and drove the students back into the school premises where they were contained.

He also stated that the former disciplinary committee headed by mostly S.6 prefects caned some S.4 students due to gross indiscipline. This forced the latter to gang up and staged a fight against all S.6 students.

He also said that the S.4 students accused the S.6 of assaulting their classmates and in retaliation, they developed a fight which later spread over into the neighboring community.

Police confirmed that at least 10 students of S.4 had been admitted at Ruharo Mission Hospital while 01 at Homily Hospital all located in Mbarara City.

In other sources; after the incident, the Board of Governors suspended all the S.4 and S.6 candidates for a period of two weeks effective Thursday 23rd June 2022 and they were escorted out of the school premises by security to go home.
