Police have embarked on a manhunt for suspected machete-wielding thugs who allegedly raided the home of Mityana Municipal Council Mayor Faustino Lukongwe.
Rachel Kawala, the Wamala Regional Police Spokesman, said the unknown thugs, armed with pangas and wearing face masks, reportedly attacked the mayor’s residence on Wednesday at 2:30 a.m. July 7, 2024, and demanded money and damaged property.
Mayor Lukongwe told police that he gave the thugs Shs 900,000 and his phone through the window before they could leave the scene.
Kawala said a special team of investigators has been deployed to hunt for the suspected thugs.
“It is alleged that thugs demanded money as they were hitting, cutting, and damaging the window glass of the mayor’s house. The mayor, on hearing the thugs, shouted from inside, and the thugs confidently demanded money. Fearing for his life, the mayor gave in Ugx 900,000 to the thugs through the window; they also demanded his phone, which he gave, and they immediately fled the scene, leaving the window glass broken,” said Kawala.
Police in the region recently arrested six suspects connected to a series of highway robberies along the Kampala-Mityana road, which may be relevant to ongoing criminal activities in the area.
These suspects were apprehended after a six-month investigation and are believed to be part of a gang that has been targeting motorists and traders. The investigation into the mayor’s case is still active, and police have not disclosed any specific suspects linked to that incident yet.
During the recent police operation in Mityana, several items of evidential value were recovered from the homes of the suspects arrested in connection with a series of robberies.
