Police Probe Fatal Iganga-Mbale Highway Crash Involving Tata Lorry and Toyota Hiace

Police in Iganga District are investigating a fatal road crash that occurred on March 25, 2025, at Mazuba, Maganda Sub County, along the Iganga-Mbale Highway in Namutumba District. The accident claimed the lives of two people and left eight others injured.

In a statement released on March 26, 2025, Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, confirmed that the crash involved three vehicles: A Tata Lorry (UBQ 901S), A Toyota Hiace (UBJ 358P), An unidentified vehicle.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the Toyota Hiace driver, who was traveling at high speed, attempted to overtake the Tata Lorry,”Kananura said

Kananura said in a desperate move to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle, the Hiace driver swerved too close to the Tata Lorry, causing the lorry’s front corner to shear off the Hiace’s roof. The Hiace then lost control and rolled multiple times, resulting in the fatalities and injuries.

He further revealed that the injured victims were rushed to Iganga Hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital’s mortuary.

Unfortunately, the driver of the Toyota Hiace fled the scene and remains at large. Police have launched a manhunt and further investigations are underway.

Authorities have warned motorists against speeding and reckless overtaking, citing this incident as a stark reminder of the dangers of irresponsible driving. The police have also reiterated the need for strict adherence to traffic regulations to reduce road fatalities.

This crash adds to a growing number of multi-vehicle collisions on Uganda’s highways, particularly on routes like Iganga-Jinja, where similar accidents have occurred in recent months. Police continue to urge all road users to prioritize safety by exercising caution and respecting speed limits to prevent further tragedies.
