Police Officer Killed by Mob in Ibanda; 29 Suspects Arrested

The Uganda Police Force has strongly condemned the brutal killing of Police Constable (PC) Chemonges Suleiman, who was attacked by a mob on April 6, 2025, during a burial ceremony in Ibanda District.

PC Chemonges, attached to Bisheshe Police Station, had been deployed to provide security at the funeral of Kahangire Lazarus, a suspect previously arrested for attempted murder.

According to a statement released on Monday, April 7, 2025, the incident occurred at approximately 2:00 PM in Kambogo Cell, Bisheshe Division. The mob, angered by Chemonges’ involvement in Kahangire’s arrest and subsequent detention, launched a violent attack on the officer.

Despite attempting to protect himself by firing warning shots, PC Chemonges was overwhelmed and killed by the mob. Police later recovered an SMG rifle, along with 16 rounds of ammunition, at the scene. His body was transported to Ruhoko Health Centre for a postmortem examination.

In response to the attack, Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the arrest of 29 suspects in connection with the murder, with efforts continuing to identify and apprehend additional perpetrators.

“The Uganda Police Force condemns this brutal and senseless act of violence,” We will ensure that all those involved in this crime are held accountable.”Kituuma said.

Kituuma described the incident as an assault on the rule of law and issued a stern warning against mob justice.

“Officers carrying out their lawful duties deserve protection and respect, not violence,” he stressed.

The police also urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, encouraging community members to collaborate with law enforcement to resolve grievances legally.

“We appeal to the public to act responsibly and report crimes through proper channels rather than resorting to unlawful actions,” the statement concluded.

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have promised further arrests as they continue to pursue those responsible for the crime.
