The Uganda Police Force (UPF) deputy spokesperson, ACP Claire Nabakka, has said the UPF and the leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP) held a constructive meeting aimed at addressing the safety concerns of overloading vehicles and reckless driving.

According to ACP Nabakka, the consultative meeting on July 11, 2024, was prompted by events that occurred on May 31, 2024, which resulted in a fatal accident involving NUP supporters.

“The accident occurred along the Kampala-Masaka highway; it claimed three lives and left two others seriously injured. The incident led to the UPF halting the NUP’s consultative activities, citing the need to review the circumstances surrounding the tragedy,” ACP Nabakka said.

Nabakka stated that both parties (police and NUP) reviewed the CCTV footage of the May 31 procession and made several observations.

“The key findings included overloading vehicles, reckless driving, and the involvement of a Toyota Hiace vehicle that collided with several motorcycles, leading to the fatalities,” she said.

She further stated that several resolutions to ensure the safety of all road users were reached.

“These include stopping with immediate effect the practice of carrying people on vehicle rooftops, limiting the number of passengers in vehicles, and complying with traffic regulations,” Nabakka added.

According to NUP leadership, the meeting and resolutions represent a positive step towards finding common ground and addressing the concerns raised.

“We are committed to working with the police to ensure the safety of our supporters and all Ugandans during our events,” NUP leadership said.

However, the NUP leadership was urged to take responsibility for the conduct of their members and prevail upon them to adhere to the agreed-upon measures.

Both parties acknowledged the need for continued engagement and cooperation to maintain law and order during political activities.

The UPF reiterated its constitutional mandate to protect life and property, as well as its authority to regulate assemblies and processions on public roads, and pledged to continue engaging with other political parties and organizations to promote a peaceful and secure environment for all.
