Traffic police have issued guidelines to all road users to reduce the increasing number of motor accidents on the roads.
In the statement issued on Monday, August 26, 2024, SP Michael Kananura said that for safe travel, every driver should take regular breaks every two hours during long drives to rest and recharge.
He said this helps to prevent driver fatigue, which can impair one’s reaction time and judgment.
Kananura said a driver should keep the windows partially open to maintain a refreshing airflow and stay alert, avoiding the onset of drowsiness. Never resort to using drugs to stay awake, as they can have unpredictable effects and lead to a crash.
“Drivers should always follow traffic rules and regulations. Wear a seatbelt and ensure all passengers do too; avoid speeding and adjust speed according to road conditions; and keep a safe distance from other vehicles,” Kananura stated.
He warned drivers to be cautious when overtaking or changing lanes, to use signals when turning or changing lanes, and for pedestrians to use designated pedestrian crossings and follow signals.
This development comes after a fatal crash at Kitubulu along the Entebbe Highway on August 25, 2024, resulting in the loss of two lives. The crash involved an UBK 114K (Toyota Wish) and an UFB 988K (Bajaj Boxer motorcycle).
