The Parliament of Uganda has pledged 1 billion shillings towards the construction of a cancer bunker at Nsambya Hospital.

The announcement was made by Speaker of Parliament Anita Among during the launch of the Rotary Cancer Run 2024 held today April 24, 2024, at Nsambya Hospital.

“Parliament’s support is intended to complement government efforts towards decongesting existing cancer treatment facilities,” Among said.

According to Among the UGX 1 billion will aid the construction of a cancer treatment facility at Nsambya Hospital, enhancing healthcare services offered to the public.

Among urged Nsambya Hospital to create awareness and sensitize people about this facility so that they can access treatment at subsidized prices

Speaker Among also revealed a personal donation to the initiative.

Rotarian Stephen Mwanje, spearheading the cancer run has said the aim of the cancer run 2024 is to raise funds for the cancer bunker project.

“Rotarians are aware that cancer is a top killer in Uganda. Over 30,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year, and over 20,000 die from it.” Mwanje said.

Mwanje urged public participation in the fundraising efforts. “Tickets for the run are only 30,000 shillings,” he informed the audience. “We need more funds to ensure the timely completion of the cancer bunker.”

The Rotary Cancer Run is scheduled for August 25, 2024, at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds where the ambitious goal is to generate four billion shillings.
