Over 900 members of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) ditched their cards and crossed over to the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

According to Richard Todwong, the NRM party secretary, during the last campaign rally held in Oyam North, Oyam district, today, July 4, 2023, these include the District council leaders who will sign a memorandum of understanding. These were Godfrey Ojok, Bless Royal Ajok, Ochen Tonny, Sadam Okulu, and Alegu Doreen. Others included Former Oyam North MP Krispus Ayena Odongo, Former Lira district Council Speaker George Rashid Opio, and George Ojwang Opota, a former district councillor in Lira. Krispus Ayena called upon all other UPC members to join the NRM. These were received by President Museveni, the NRM Party Chairman.

“I was a staunch UPC member who did everything within my affordability to the extent of going to the bush to fight the NRM government, but at the end of the day I am today making that official declaration that I have been totally defeated and I could not make it anymore as the result of that if you cannot defeat them, the saying is clear and therefore join them, and with that declaration, I call upon the members of the Uganda People Congress, I have been their leader, that when you see your commander laying down his tools, I call you to join me. We are defeated. Let’s join the NRM government for purposes of daily service delivery to our people”, Ayena said.
