The opposition Members of Parliament recently exhibited a spirited battle in the house to save the Uganda Coffee Development Authority from being rationalized into the Ministry of Agriculture.
Despite their confusion, the spirited struggle to save UCDA shows a strong belief in the ruling National Resistance Movement regime under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Their battle to save UCDA lasted for a few months when the rationalization debate started in Parliament, but the same people contradicted themselves; they forgot how they have been accusing NRM of killing all institutions in the country, claiming that no government institution functions.
How did the opposition realize that UCDA, which was installed by NRM in 1991, was relevant in fostering the growth of the coffee industry??
These opposition politicians have underscored NRM’s principle of socio-economic transformation and confirmed that NRM is determined to develop its people.
By 1986, when President Museveni took over, Uganda was producing only 2 million bags of coffee.
Through President Museveni’s intervention, the coffee industry has boomed, and Uganda can produce over 9 million bags of coffee and earn over USD 1 billion.
The credit should then be given to President Museveni and the NRM government.
The interventions by President Museveni and the NRM have seen 68% of Ugandans enter the money economy. Instead of appreciating, the opposition instead chose to tribalize the coffee issue in their politics of deception and confusion.
No wonder the coffee bill has exposed the opposition more with their dubious activities and lack of will to develop the people they represent.
They choose to oppose anything without thinking twice, and they end up showing that they hate their country and do whatever they do for selfish reasons.
The opposition hyping and appreciating UCDA’s activities shows how other government institutions are also performing, but the opposition survives on telling lies and selectively doing things. Since they have been complaining about the decay of institutions, how did UCDA become a star performer out of the blue?
Such contradictions show that these opposition people do not actually know the issues affecting their people, and therefore their utterances should be taken with a grain of salt. They castigate and appreciate at the same time; their focus is on selfish interests and nothing more.
