The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) board of directors has approved an increase in the water tariff by 10% across all tariff categories, effective July 2023.

According to an internal memo, domestic users who have been paying UGX 3727 now will pay UGX 4,100, representing an increase of UGX 373 for every unit of water.

The increase follows a decision adopted by the directors in a meeting held earlier in July 2023, as provided for under Statutory Instrument No. 50 of December 7, 2018.

“NWSC Water and Sewerage Rates shall be subjected to indexation every financial year against the following parameters: Domestic Price index, Exchange rate, Foreign price index, and Electricity tariff,” the statutory instrument stipulates.

The new rates have now changed the billing system, with the Public Stand Pipe tariff, designed strictly for individuals who sell water to the community or public, remaining unchanged at UGX 1,060 per m3.

Institutional accounts such as hospitals, schools, and government establishments will pay UGX 4,148 instead of UGX 3,771 per m3.

Commercial accounts consuming between 0-1,500 m3 and those consuming over 1500 m3 per month will pay UGX. 4,920 and 3,933 from the previous 4,473 and 3,575 per m3, respectively.

The industrial account consuming under 1,000 m3 per month and Over 1000 m3 per month will pay 4,920 and 2,500 from the previous 4,473 and 2,500 per m3, respectively.

The indexation is value-added tax (VAT) exclusive and is expected to help the corporation continue providing the same quality of service in all its areas of operation.

It should be noted that the NWSC tariff was last indexed in July 2022.
