In a speech rich with parables and subtle references, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II marked his 31st coronation anniversary by addressing the growing concerns about the National Unity Platform (NUP) party and its leader, Bobi Wine. The Kabaka expressed his discontent with NUP’s actions, which he believes undermine the cultural heritage of Buganda, particularly through social media.
The Kabaka’s message was clear despite its parabolic nature; he urged the Baganda to remain vigilant and to recognize the NUP group as adversaries to the kingdom’s values and traditions. This indirect but firm rebuke highlighted the growing tension between the Buganda Kingdom and the NUP political party.
In alignment with Kabaka’s sentiments, many Baganda have raised their voices, demanding a public apology from Bobi Wine to the Kabaka and the Buganda Kingdom. This call for an apology reflects the deep respect and loyalty the Baganda have for their cultural institutions and leaders.
The significance of Kabaka’s message was further underscored during the coronation celebrations when the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), Joel Ssenyonyi, faced an unusually cold reception despite multiple introductions by the Bishop. This lack of recognition from the public emphasizes the community’s growing discontent with the NUP’s perceived disrespect.
As the situation deepens, the response from NUP and its leadership will be crucial. One thing remains certain: the unity and cultural pride of the Buganda Kingdom stand firm against any perceived threats. Early this year, the NUP Deputy President for Central Region, Matthias Mpuuga, while appearing on the Buganda Kingdom radio, also confirmed that Bobi Wine was funding NUP social media activists locally and internationally to abuse and insult the Kabaka, Katikiro, and the Buganda Kingdom.
The relationship between Buganda Kingdom and Bobi Wine has reached irreparable levels to the extent that Bobi Wine was not invited to attend the recent Kabaka’s coronation anniversary. Bobi has been seen to fight Buganda Kingdom-bred politicians like Mpuuga and others over rumors and personal issues, a sign of direct attack on the kingdom.
There is no doubt that definitely NUP and Bobi Wine’s performance in Buganda come 2026 will be affected by Bobi’s war against the kingdom and undermining Kabaka and the people of Buganda. Bobi Wine has continued to portray himself as bigger than Kabaka and Buganda, which ideally is a war against the people of Buganda.
Attacking Buganda Kingdom is Bobi Wine’s biggest strategic mistake in the history of his political career, knowing that Buganda had hopes in him, and that is the reason his support and votes only came from the central region. After losing Buganda, Bobi Wine is undoubtedly finished politically, and it is possible he may never rise again.
