NUP-USA Diaspora Suspends Funding Over Lack of Financial Accountability

The National Unity Platform (NUP) diaspora community in the United States has decided to stop sending money to the party until they receive a full and clear report on how funds from the last four years have been used.

This decision came after a heated town hall meeting held over the weekend in Boston, Massachusetts. The meeting was organized by Justice Hunter, also known as Sseguya Hillary Taylor Innocent, and brought together over 100 NUP supporters from across the U.S. These supporters have been financially backing the party’s activities in Uganda for several years.

“We are more than 1,000 committed supporters here in the U.S., each contributing between $200 and $500 every month,” But in all the four years we’ve been supporting the party, no one has ever given us a clear account of how the money has been spent,” Justice Hunter said.

Hunter explained that tensions rose when NUP’s Head of Mobilization, Chairman Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, dismissed their concerns and even insulted members who asked for transparency.

Nyanzi had traveled to the U.S. to request more support for mobilization activities planned from May 2025 leading up to the 2026 general elections in Uganda.
“When we asked for accountability, Chairman Nyanzi chose to deflect and deceive us instead of being honest,” That is not the kind of leadership this party should stand for,” Hunter said.

He added that the diaspora has now asked Chairman Nyanzi to inform party president Bobi Wine about their concerns and to ensure the matter is addressed before the end of the week.

“Staying silent is not an option,” he stressed.

Hunter also made it clear that the diaspora will not send any more money unless they receive proper, documented financial reports.

He warned against the party falling into the same habits as the government they are trying to change.

“If we begin to act like the regime we are fighting, then what’s the point of our struggle?” All Ugandan politicians who come for meetings in the U.S. should know we will hold you accountable.” he said

As of now, neither Chairman Nyanzi nor the NUP leadership has publicly responded to the concerns raised by the U.S. diaspora or the halt in funding.
