The National Unity Platform (NUP) party, in a dramatic turn of events, faces an eminent split following the launch of a new political group by Spartan Mukagyi, one of the party’s key figures in the 2021 general elections.
The announcement to launch a new political group called People Power Front (PPF) has raised concerns within the NUP and its leadership since people power is one of the NUP’s slogans and a key player in the opposition against the ruling government.
Mukagyi, known for his charismatic leadership and grassroots mobilization efforts for the NUP, as experienced during the previous presidential elections, has made his interests known and clear.
“We are in the final stages of creating our own group with a clear ideology more pronounced from that of NUP; as we all know, NUP lost truck; it is not the NUP we knew and worshiped,” Mukagyi said.
He adds that “our people deserve better representation and a political platform that truly reflects their aspirations. This new group will focus on inclusivity, transparency, and accountability. Mukagyi added.
Following Mukagyi’s announcement of a new political group, NUP leadership decided to move to the Teso region to try and market the party by introducing Kunga to the region.
However, Mukagyi’s announcement has sparked mixed reactions among NUP supporters and political analysts. While some view his move as a necessary evolution in Ugandan politics, others fear that it could weaken the NUP in the face of upcoming elections.
Sources within the NUP have indicated that tensions have been brewing for some time, with differing opinions on strategy and leadership style.
“With the emergency of Mukagyi and his announcement of a new political group whereby most Diaspora activists and NUP supporters are in close contact with him, this should be a big concern to the NUP party and its leadership,” a source said.
Patrick Wakida, a political analyst, stated that a split could have significant implications for the NUP’s ability to challenge the ruling party effectively.
“I believe the new political group is expected to attract a faction of disillusioned NUP members and supporters; it will indeed cause a split since Mukagyi is Rubongoya’s personal friend,” Wakida said.
As the political climate in Uganda continues to evolve, the coming months towards 2026 general elections will be crucial in determining the impact of this development on the NUP and the broader opposition landscape.
Mukagyi has pledged to announce further details about his new political initiative in the coming days, promising a platform that prioritizes the needs and voices of ordinary Ugandans.
