Kampala Woman Member of Parliament Shamim Malende has accused Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, and the entire leadership of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) of negligence while in the hospital and waiting to fight for supremacy during her funeral like they recently did to the late MP Ssegirinya.
MP Malende is currently hospitalized at Nsambya Hospital, where she has already spent three months fighting for her life.
A source says MP Malende is battling an infection that has continued to eat her body immune system with low CD4 counts and an increasing number of viral loads in her blood.
On Monday, January 20, 2025, Malende expressed dissatisfaction in the manner in which NUP and specifically Bobi Wine had ignored her as she continues to fight for her life and perhaps only waiting to fight during her funeral, a replay of the circumstances that surrounded the late Muhammad Ssegirinya.
In a heartfelt statement, Malende remarked, “I worry that my party members are just waiting for me to die, just like they did with Ssegirinya, to fight for my body instead of being here for me when I need them the most.”
Further fueling her frustrations, Malende alleged that party president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, is planning to bring his side partner, who she didn’t mention, to take her position as Kampala Woman MP in the upcoming elections.
“The hypocrisy is overwhelming. While I’ve been fighting for my life, it seems that those in leadership are more focused on power plays rather than supporting their own,” she stated.
When contacted for a comment on Malende’s allegations, NUP spokesperson Waiswa Mufumbiro dismissed her claims, suggesting that she had failed to fulfill her responsibilities to her constituents.
“Now she’s faking illness to gain public sympathy ahead of the 2026 elections. It’s regrettable,” Mufumbiro remarked, insisting that the party remain focused on its mission and cannot be swayed by personal theatrics.
Malende’s plight highlights the tensions within NUP, as her public criticisms could potentially deepen the fractures in the party.
