NUP infiltrates UNATU top leadership to maintain teachers strike

For the past three consecutive weeks, learners in government aided schools have stayed home and their schools closed as teachers remained striking over pay rise.

The strike was sanctioned by the Uganda National Teachers Union-UNATU.

On Tuesday, public service Ministry announced that efforts to mediate with UNATU to have the strike ended is ongoing.

Whereas teachers are believed to be striking for the right cause, Intelligence has unearthed how the ongoing protest has been infiltrated by a section of opposition political opportunists mainly from the National Unity Platform-NUP.

It is also said the group is responsible for mounting pressure to subdue the decision of UNATU SG filbert Baguma on Tuesday when he temporarily called off the strike to allow mediation with government.

In his tongue twisting message, UNATU Baguma had directed all teachers to resume work immediately by Wednesday June 29th but due to horrendously hefty pressure mounted by the NUP group, he was forced to talk in tongue and soon rescinded.

Security source revealed that a huge number of UNATU executive members are known NUP apologists who have often been cited in various secret meetings with the group.

The source further revealed how some UNATU executive officials are clandestinely engaging and plotting with the NUP group to keep teachers striking for a longer period.

The move also aims at influencing teachers through UNATU not to accept any negotiation with government as long as their demand is not met in a bid to discredit NRM achievements.

According to the source, some key executive members of UNATU are bitter with the regime for turning down their individual demands and interests hence using their position to incite teachers to keep striking.

It has also been established that these same executive members are being financially supported by the group in a move to keep oiling the protest.

A state friendly member among UNATU top leadership revealed that the mission is continue undressing the state by ensuring that teachers’ strike is not ended soon.

Non-science teachers in government secondary schools across the country, their primary school counterparts, and tutors in teacher training colleges have remained on strike for over three weeks now.
