National Unity Platform (NUP) members who were smuggled into the United States under the guise of political persecution are on the verge of deportation after officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) established that they lied.

According to ICE officials, a wave of migrants from Uganda sought refuge in the US, citing political oppression and human rights abuses back home; however, investigations have revealed that these individuals were smuggled into the country, claiming political persecution only as a pretext for entry, and there was no evidence to support their claims.

ICE officials assert that the findings have raised concerns about the legitimacy of NUP supporters’ asylum claims, but they still have a window to legitimize their asylum only if Kamala Harris wins the presidency since her administration has a lenient policy for asylum seekers.

“That won’t be the case under President Donald Trump since he employs a hardline approach to immigration, prioritizing border security and the expulsion of undocumented individuals. His administration’s policies are known for leading to increased deportations and strict enforcement measures against those who entered the country illegally,” ICE officials said.

They added that should Trump win the presidency again, there will be a return to similar policies, which could have severe consequences for the Ugandan illegal migrants currently residing in the U.S. under the guise of political prosecution.

James Mugerwa, one of the NUP illegal migrants in the US, says he’s colleagues have now resorted to homosexuality to increase their bargaining power in their quest for asylum.

The situation for undocumented Ugandan migrants in the U.S. is uncertain, particularly in light of the possibility of a Trump presidency.

The 2024 US presidential election will be the 60th quadrennial presidential election, set to be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, with former president Donald Trump going against Vice President Kamala Harris.
