The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party leadership has forced the ailing Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya to call off a planned media briefing that was meant to inform the country about his deteriorating medical condition.
Ssegirinya, who was meant to address the media on his health issues and the party position on Monday, October 7, 2024, at his office in Kyebando, Kampala, did not show up for the briefing after unceremoniously calling off the event.
A source at the NUP headquarters confirmed that Ssegirinya was forced to call off the media briefing by the top leadership upon the guidance of Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine after it leaked that the bitter legislator had intended to attack the top party bosses.
“The principal didn’t authorize the press conference to take place fearing that Ssegirinya would expose some party secrets and how most of the party leaders treated him since he became. They also feared that he would talk about how some top officials had branded him an NRM mole in NUP. Ssegirinya was warned that if he gets on the press conference, his party card would be revoked from him,” the source revealed.
Ssegirinya sent Ssewanyana, who had already split up with the party, to address the media on his condition and to thank the government of Uganda, specifically President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and parliament for funding his medical treatment.
“We want to thank the Parliament of Uganda for paying Segirinya’s hospital bills. Now he is feeling better, and we shall organize a Thanksgiving for his health on November 15, 2024, at Kyebando playgrounds,” Ssewanyana said.
