The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party has accused Erias Lukwago, the Kampala Lord Mayor, of working as an agent for President Yoweri Museveni to undermine the opposition’s efforts and divide the political landscape of Uganda.

According to Waiswa Mufumbiro, deputy spokesperson of the NUP, Lukwago, who is also the interim leader of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), is a mole in the opposition who should out rightly be sidelined.

On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, while responding to Lukwago’s recent call to the Baganda to abandon NUP and join PFF, Mufumbiro expressed concerns about what he termed a growing trend of opposition figures colluding with the oppressor to sabotage the ‘struggle.’

“Lukwago’s recent statements suggest he is more aligned with Museveni’s interests than those of the Ugandan people. His activities are aimed at dismantling what we have built in the opposition and distracting us from our common goal,” Mufumbiro said.

Mufumbiro added that Lukwago has been roaming around Uganda’s political parties, but wherever he goes, he creates division and chaos, something that only benefits Museveni.

“He started with DP and he left it divided; he joined FDC, and now it is on the verge of extinction; it is the same reason he’s making such utterances against NUP just to destroy the opposition,” Mufumbiro said.

Mufumbiro noted that Lukwago is not only a political prostitute but a force of destruction in the opposition who is well funded by the regime.

Mufumbiro’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about the effectiveness of opposition strategies in challenging the ruling party’s dominance.

Political analysts suggest that such accusations reflect deeper tensions within the opposition and the ongoing struggle for a unified front against the ruling party.

The NUP and other opposition parties face the challenge of maintaining unity while navigating accusations and political maneuvering that could impact their effectiveness in the upcoming elections.
