The National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters in Mukono district have rejected and voiced their discontent about electing Betty Nambooze, the woman Member of Parliament (MP) for Mukono municipality, as the party’s district chairperson, citing her dishonesty and misrepresentation over the past years.

The disapproval follows Monday’s (August 13, 2024) gathering where numerous party members gathered to elect district party representatives, where the majority of the supporters outright rejected Nambooze as the favored representative and expressed their frustrations concerning her endless lies of fringing sickness and taking a lot of money from the government for treatment.

According to enraged locals, Nambooze is a serial lier who has managed to manipulate them for a long time through alleging that her back was injured while fighting for her electorates and she cannot walk on her own without support, hence winning public sympathy.

“We are tired of this fake woman; she has taken us for a ride for a very long time by riding on public sympathy due to her alleged back issues. No more of these lies; we have had enough and demand that she is not elected to any office and should also not be given the chance to run as the party flag bearer,” one of the NUP supporters at the gathering said.

They added that Nambooze does not align with the party’s values and principles. They feel that her alleged lies have not only damaged her credibility but also tarnished the image of the NUP.

One of her neighbors who is also a staunch NUP supporter revealed that Nambooze, while in her home, goes about her normal and daily activities without a wheelchair, but whenever she steps out into the public, she appears on a wheelchair.

“We cannot stand by and allow someone who does not speak the truth and thrives on deceptions to continue misrepresenting us; we demand that she first offers accountability for all the money advanced to her by the government for her alleged sickness, which we all know is a shum and is used by this woman to gain public sympathy,” the neighbor added.

However, Nambooze has defended herself by rushing to X handle to claim that it is her enemies against her who want to compete against her in 2026.

“We are aware of all the tricks the enemies are using to weaken our party, but we shall not allow them. I know MPs are going to face the same problem as we head to 2026, but we will in the end become victorious,“ Nambooze tweeted.

Nonetheless, John Musila Member of Parliament Bubulo West said that most opposition MPs are corrupt, adding that Nambooze is among those MPs that sign for per diem and never travel; she has over 60 abroad trips she has picked money for and never traveled to.

“When we talk about corruption, it is not only in NRM; even people in opposition are corrupt; they sign for per diem and never travel for those trips; fighting corruption should be a collective effort,” Musila said.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the NUP leadership will respond to the demands of its supporters and what this will mean for Nambooze’s political career.
