Sheikh Shabban Ramadan Mubajje, the Mufti of Uganda, has demanded an apology from Bobi Wine and the National Unity Platform (NUP) to the Muslim community for causing chaos at the funeral of the late Kawempe North Member of Parliament Ssegirinya Muhammad, which was against the Islamic traditions.
During a media briefing on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council headquarters, Mufti Mubajje accused Bobi Wine and the National Unity Platform (NUP) of mishandling the funeral of the late Ssegirinya Muhammad and his family, in violation of Islamic practices. He condemned their actions, including deploying individuals to incite chaos and disrupt the proceedings.
“It is the duty of fellow Muslims to extend condolences, offer comfort, and support the family and relatives of the deceased, as well as to take the lead in the burial,” Mufti Mubajje said.
Mufti Mubajje stressed that during a mourning night, Muslims should come together to recite the Quran aloud, seeking Allah’s forgiveness for the deceased. However, he expressed disappointment that on January 11, 2025, the National Unity Platform (NUP) politicised the solemn occasion and used it as an opportunity to insult the government.
Mufti Mubajje explained that before burial, a special Duwa should be held for the deceased, seeking Allah’s forgiveness and comfort for the family. Unfortunately, he noted that the late Ssegirinya’s mother and family were kidnapped and confined to their home, preventing them from participating in the Duwa. He expressed that the Muslim community is deeply upset with Bobi Wine and the NUP group for their actions.
He condemned the manner in which Bobi Wine and the National Unity Platform managed the death of the late Muhammad Ssegirinya, violating the norms of Islam.
The Mufti emphasised that such disrespectful actions should cease, ensuring that no Muslim family experiences similar treatment in the future.
