The Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth, has called upon the newly appointed Board of Directors of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) to focus on the corporation’s prosperity, growth, and long-term sustainability, while adhering to their statutory responsibilities.

During the inauguration ceremony held at NEC’s headquarters in Bugoloobi, Kampala, on 23 July 2024, Minister Oboth-Oboth emphasized the importance of accountability in fostering trust and respect among investors.

“I expect total accountability because accountability breeds acceptance and respectability by investors for the enterprise. Both business prosperity and accountability are at the forefront of every corporation’s strategic thinking, planning, and activity,” Oboth-Oboth said.

He charged the Board with the responsibility of steering the corporation toward fulfilling its mission in alignment with the UPDF objectives.

“The necessity for NEC is to engage in initiatives that contribute to Uganda’s overall development, as mandated by the Constitution,” Oboth-Oboth added.

Established in 1989 by an Act of Parliament, the National Enterprise Corporation serves as the commercial arm of the Ministry of Defense and Veteran Affairs/Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces.

Lt. General James Mugira, the Managing Director of NEC, expressed optimism about the diverse expertise that the new board members bring to the table.

“The management looks forward to working closely with the board to take NEC to greater heights,” Lt Gen Mugira remarked.

He further stated that NEC’s mission is to produce goods and services that benefit both the Defence Forces and the general public through various subsidiaries and joint ventures.

General (Rtd) Joram Mugume, the newly appointed Board Chairman, praised the outgoing board for their dedication and hard work, which significantly enhanced NEC’s performance and led to notable achievements.

As the new board embarks on this critical journey, the focus on accountability and strategic growth will be essential in ensuring that NEC continues to thrive and fulfill its mission for the betterment of Uganda.

The newly inaugurated board comprises distinguished members, including Gen (Rtd) Joram Mugume (Chairman), Prof. Charles Kwesiga, Lt Gen Charles Otema Awany, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, Lt Gen Charles Okidi, Lt Gen James Mugira, Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba, Maj Gen David Mugisha,  Francis Kahirita Ngabirano, Eng.
