Brigadier General William Bainomugisha, the Commandant Military Police, has tasked Military Police personnel to always perform their duties and responsibilities with a high level of professionalism, especially when dealing with civilians.

He made these remarks on December 20, 2023, while speaking at the closure of a two-week leadership workshop for military police officers and non-commissioned officers.

“When dealing with the civilian population, you have to show good discipline to them, as this is the only way to exhibit a good example to the civilians,” Bainomugisha stated.

He stated that discipline and being exemplary should be paramount in their daily lives and in the execution of their duties of enforcing discipline in the UPDF.

In 1995, the Ugandan Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) was established with the aim of emphasising professionalism and civilian oversight, with a dedicated Military Police branch responsible for enforcing military discipline and regulations in the force.

According to Brig Gen Bainomugisha, the Military Police roles include enforcing law and order within the armed forces, reinforcing civil Police, detention and apprehension of offenders and custodian of UPDF inmates.

Colonel Justus Musenen, the Military Police Brigade Operations and Training Officer, said the workshop has enhanced cohesion between the command and staff, bridged the gaps, and improved the discipline amongst the Military Police personnel.

Lt. Col. R. Ochieng, speaking on behalf of the attendees, stated that the training provided them with knowledge and abilities that will help them do their tasks.

In attendance were commanding officers of units under the Military Police, heads of departments, and regimental sergeant majors.
