More than 200 members from opposition parties, including the National Unity Platform (NUP), Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), and Democratic Party (DP), have officially joined the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

The new members come from areas like Mubende, Luuka, Packwach, and Rubaga Divisions in Kampala. This move marks a significant increase in the NRM’s strength in these regions.

The announcement was made by NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong on September 19, 2024, during a ceremony at the party’s headquarters in Kampala. He explained that the increase in new members shows the NRM’s successful governance and service delivery.

“The growing number of individuals joining NRM is a testament to our party’s effective governance. Many have come to realize that other parties lack substantial policies and solutions,” Todwong stated.

He highlighted that improvements in infrastructure, better road networks, and the supply of electricity are major reasons why people are choosing the NRM.

Rosemary Nansubuga Seninde, the Director of Mobilisation, Recruitment, and Cadre Development, noted a rise in support from young people. She believes this trend will positively impact the upcoming 2026 general elections.

“The shift in youth support is a positive trend compared to the 2021 elections when many were uncertain about openly supporting the NRM,” Seninde said. She hopes this growing support will enhance the NRM’s chances in the next elections.

Earlier this year, the NRM has seen a surge in new membership registrations, with many supporters and leaders from other parties defecting to the ruling party.

In June, over 20 youth leaders from other political parties, including NUP, FDC, and UYD, joined the NRM.

In July, more than 500 strong opposition supporters switched their allegiance to the NRM during Bobi Wine’s rally in Rukungiri, a town that was once considered a stronghold for the FDC.

Recently, notable FDC MPs like Mapenduzi and Kantuntu also made headlines by joining the NRM.
