Residents of Lira town have decided to close their shops for fear of losing their merchandise to NUP goons as the National Unity Platform (NUP) party nears the end of their political tour across the country.

The national tour which began on Monday, August 28, 2023, in the Western region and ends Thursday, September 7, 2023, in Lango sub-region.

The tour that seemed to be going well since its genesis has taken a dramatic turn when the business community in Lira Town closed their shops after being tipped off that the NUP goons are planning to cause chaos in the city that will culminate in looting people’s goods from their shops. According to residents, they thought it wise and safe to close business until they are sure of peace and quiet in their district.

Auma, a business lady, said that they decided to keep their shops under lock so as to safeguard their goods.

While speaking with Singhi, a shopkeeper selling bicycles on Obote Avenue in Lira City, he revealed that they are concerned that their stock will be looted.

“The last time Bobi Wine was here, we lost property to city dwellers,” Singhi said.

“They are planning to antagonise security forces so that chaos ensues and they loot; we know their antics,” he added.

However, this comes as a surprise to the residents, as the NUP had previously praised the Ugandan government for allowing them to traverse the country peacefully and without obstruction.
