Two construction workers in Kyengera town council, Wakiso district, have been confirmed dead after an entrance gate being mounted collapsed on them at a residential house in Katale cell, Bunamwaya parish.

The incident, which occurred on the evening of July 25, 2024, has been subjected to investigations by the Kampala Metropolitan Police.

The preliminary police report indicates that the two workers identified as Joseph Mugerwa and David Semakula, both 22 years old, were working at Julius Mubiru’s house at eight o’clock in the evening when the incident occurred.

According to the deputy metropolitan police spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the victims who died on the spot were retrieved right away, and the bodies were sent to the city mortuary in Mulago for postmortem evaluation.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. Our team is conducting a thorough investigation,” Owoyesigyire said.

The rules and regulations governing a construction site and ensuring the safety of workers stipulates that for one to work on a construction site, they need general construction safety training practices like Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), site-specific induction training, emergency procedures, safe method statements (SWMS), and regular safety audits. These training components are part of comprehensive construction safety programs designed to promote a culture of safety and prevent accidents, injuries, and fatalities.
