Police in Kanungu have arrested the Kanungu district Assistant Human Resource Officer for getting involved in receiving a bribe from one of the retired teachers so as to process his pension.
The suspect has been identified as Jasper Tukamuhebwa, Assistant Human Resource Officer, who was caught red-handed in Bagira Restaurant in Kanungu Town Council soliciting a bribe of around Ugx 2 million from Levi Muteraba, a retired teacher, so as to easily access his gratuity and pension.
Preliminary information indicates that Tukamuhebwa has been accused of receiving a Ugx 2 million bribe from every retiring teacher before processing their retirement benefits.
Tukamuhebwa’s arrest attracted support and jubilation from several Kanungu retirees, as they have been victims of the same. The area police are currently carrying out further investigations.
Tukamuhebwa is among other government officials who have been arrested for involving themselves in bribery and corruption cases. In May 2024, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) of Kinaba sub-county in Kanungu district, Dickson Tumuhimbise, was arrested for soliciting Ugx 100,000 from each Parish Development Model (PDM) beneficiary in the area.
